The hotel manager remembered Yansheng asking to print a page. She did not remember seeing him leave. Yanchuan heard the second sentence as a refusal of hope, though she had offered neither hope nor its opposite.
Her staff had supplied the booking and checkout information through the case inquiry. The account had been settled through the local contractor. That was the source of Luo’s confident statement that his employee had checked out. It was a payment event, not a pair of eyes at the door.
Yanchuan thanked her and left with less certainty than he had brought. He called An from the pavement. Neither of them used the word clue. They had begun to dislike the pleasure it offered.
On Monday, the contractor allowed a witnessed demonstration in response to the technical question. Its engineer, Okello, met Yanchuan and Amina at reception. He looked at Yanchuan’s visitor badge before looking at his face.
“You are here to observe,” he said.
“I understand.”
“And if we stop, we stop.”
They went through the briefing with the people who would run the equipment. Yanchuan had expected hostility. Instead he found a technician annoyed by a missing label, a supervisor worrying about the day’s schedule, and a young engineer who had prepared the wrong version of the form. The installation had people inside it, just as Han had said.
The demonstration would use an approved load profile within the equipment’s permitted range. They were not recreating every condition of the earlier run. Everyone agreed to that before the start. Amina asked for the cooling circuit’s state to be included in the witnessed record.
Okello checked the request and nodded.
For the first few minutes the display looked like every sales presentation Yanchuan had ever endured. Lines settled. Indicators turned green. Someone behind him relaxed enough to make a joke about giving the visitor his photograph now, before the room became untidy.
Then the next load step began.
The change was small on the main display. In the room it was physical: fans climbing, air moving, a hum that Yanchuan felt in his teeth. A temperature trend rose toward the pre-agreed stop condition. The cooling circuit was carrying the demand the old summary had quietly removed.
He glanced at Amina. She was watching the technician, not the beautiful screen.
Okello called the stop before anyone asked him to. The technician acknowledged it and followed the procedure. Nothing exploded. No sparks made the decision look heroic. The demonstration simply ended before the result anyone had hoped to sell.
In the silence afterward, a commercial manager said they should have let it stabilize.
“It reached the stop condition,” Okello replied.
“The previous run passed.”
“With a different auxiliary load.”
The manager looked toward Yanchuan, as though the difference had arrived with him rather than existed before his visit.
Later, in the office, the efficiency figure was offered again. It was an impressive number. It described conversion under specified conditions, not the cost of keeping a crowded equipment room cool during every operating state. Nobody had discovered a way to make unwanted heat cease to exist.
“We can improve the control,” the young engineer said.
“Perhaps,” Amina answered. “That won’t change the test we just witnessed.”
Yanchuan watched her keep the conversation in the room. He would have followed the proposed improvement into a future where the problem was solved. She made them finish describing the present first.
The stopped demonstration would delay acceptance, cost staff time, and require another agreed plan. Yanchuan signed only the observer’s account. He could confirm what he had witnessed, not the entire installation’s history.
Outside, Okello lit a cigarette and held it without smoking.
“Your brother asked about the cooling too,” he said.
Yanchuan felt every part of himself turn toward the words.
“When?”
“That Thursday. Before he asked for the event extract.”
“Did he say what he intended to do?”
Okello shook his head. “He wanted the people signing the report to know what they were signing.”
He finally took a drag, then put the cigarette out almost at once.
On the journey back, Yanchuan sent the witnessed account through the agreed channel. Then he sent An a separate message: The checkout claim came from payment. The test question was real. Neither tells us where he went.
She called him instead of replying. For several minutes she let him describe the heat, the stop, the engineer who had held the limit. Only afterward did she ask whether he had eaten.
