The Father on the Training Floor

Jianming arrived at the training center carrying a notebook and the expression he wore when somebody intended to explain a thing he already understood.

Yanchuan had invited his father to observe Ning’s practical course. The college had agreed on the condition that visitors remained outside the marked equipment area. Jianming inspected the visitor badge and asked whether it permitted him to ask questions.

“It doesn’t prohibit them,” Ning said.

“Good. I’ve brought several.”

The class was learning how to respond when a scheduling assistant recommended restarting a motor after an alarm. The display showed temperature, current and a projected production loss that increased every minute. The students knew they should inspect the physical machine before authorizing a restart. The exercise made that decision expensive.

One trainee read the recommendation aloud. “Reset the warning and resume at reduced load.”

“Where is the sound?” Jianming asked.

“What sound?”

“The motor’s sound. If a bearing is failing, you might hear it before the display tells you what is wrong.”

Ning explained that the class was using a simulation. She had recordings of the machine under normal and faulty conditions but had withheld them deliberately.

“Then tell them what you withheld,” Jianming said. “Otherwise they’ll think the screen is the whole machine.”

Ning wrote missing observation on the board. The students began naming other things the interface could not show: vibration, smell, a loose mounting, an incorrectly placed sensor. The scheduling assistant knew the cost of waiting but not whether the alarm had been physically assessed.

Yanchuan watched his father listen to the discussion. During the long search for Yansheng, Jianming had become a person to whom other people delivered updates. Here he was a technician again, impatient for a question worth answering.

At the break a student named Sun asked whether experience still mattered when instruments could detect faults sooner than people.

“Of course,” Jianming began, then corrected himself. “Not because experienced people are always right. I once replaced a bearing because the motor sounded wrong. A younger worker found that the base plate had been tightened unevenly. We were listening to the same sound. He asked a better question.”

“Would you trust a computer over your own judgment?” Sun asked.

“I would ask what it measured, then what I measured. Disagreement is a reason to investigate. It isn’t a vote.”

Ning invited Jianming to sit with the class after lunch. He declined the chair at the front and chose one beside the students. He made her promise not to call him professor.

The afternoon exercise concerned a maintenance handover. A repair ticket showed a technician’s signature. The system had automatically marked the inspection complete when the ticket was transferred to another department. The physical inspection checklist remained blank.

One team approved the restart because the dashboard was green. Another asked for the missing inspection. The second lost points because the simulated production delay grew longer.

“Why are they losing?” Jianming asked.

“That’s the model’s objective,” Ning said. “It minimizes delay.”

“Then it has told you what it wants. Who told the students what the factory requires?”

Ning changed the task. Each team had to distinguish what the software optimized from what the operating procedure authorized. The two answers were not always the same.

Yanchuan recognized the distinction. In October 2026, the acceptance summary from Kenya had shown a persuasive number within a selected measurement boundary. His brother had wanted to know whether the boundary described the service actually promised. The family still lacked answers about his final movements. Yet his questions had traveled farther than the documents themselves.

At lunch Jianming pointed to a photograph in a training handout. The pictured apprentice wore gloves unsuited to the fine adjustment being demonstrated. Ning checked with the safety instructor and replaced the photograph in the next printing.

“That’s one correction,” Jianming said. “Don’t turn it into a story about how old workers know everything.”

Nobody did.

Later the class practiced refusing an incomplete restart instruction. Students had to identify missing evidence, a responsible person and the action that must remain on hold. One asked whether a worker who delayed production would be blamed for the lost output.

Jianming took his time.

“Sometimes,” he said. “A good procedure helps. A manager who follows it helps more. One worker should not have to pay the whole price for doing the right thing.”

Ning described the revised Henglan pilot dashboard. A refusal was no longer automatically counted as a failed recommendation. The process recorded why an operator declined, whether the concern was investigated and whether the person could raise it safely.

“That sounds better,” Jianming said. “Have you asked the first worker who used it?”

“Yes,” Ning replied. “We learned that a written right is not the same as an easy one.”

During the break Yanchuan walked with his father along the corridor overlooking the training floor. Students were taking turns with the rig, pausing to compare readings before acting.

“Could this course help workers my age?” Jianming asked.

“Some of them. It depends on the work.”

“Would they be paid while they learn?”

“On this program, yes.”

“Then perhaps they’ll come.”

Yanchuan had expected to explain the new systems to his father. Instead Jianming had spent the day asking what the systems left out. The discovery made Yanchuan ashamed of the smallness of his expectations.

As they reached the stairs, Jianming paused to adjust the strap of his bag. Yanchuan offered to carry it. His father refused once, then let him take it without turning the exchange into a conversation about age.

On the train home Jianming opened his notebook. Three lines filled the page: inspect before restart; pay for learning; check who can say no. Beneath them he had drawn a rectangle and an arrow pointing to an empty signature field.

“What is that?” Yanchuan asked.

“A reminder that a completed screen isn’t always a completed job.”

There was another note on the next page: ask Qiao about the lamp. The light in Wuhan had flickered again. Jianming intended to let the building electrician check the wiring before touching it himself.

That evening An called with news of her son’s school project. He had built a gate that opened when a toy bus approached. The sensor sometimes mistook a hand for a vehicle, so he had added a manual stop.

“Who presses it?” Jianming asked over the speaker.

“Whoever is standing there.”

“Can they reach it?”

“Yes.”

“Then show your teacher.”

After the call Ning sent Yanchuan a message asking whether Jianming would return for a lesson about maintenance records. He passed the question to his father.

“I’ll come,” Jianming said. “But next time she must show me a real checklist before she shows me a clever screen.”

The day had brought no news of Yansheng. Jianming had spent it asking questions the students could not answer from a screen. His son had watched them listen.

Jianming fell asleep on the train with his notebook open on his knees. Yanchuan moved it before it slipped to the floor, careful not to crease the page with the three instructions.
